walkwalkwalk newsletter number 2

Winter 2007

Dear All,

walkwalkwalk have had a really busy year, with projects in London and beyond – diverging from our Bethnal Green route to create a bespoke walk in Hackney, and a new walk archive for Kensington and Chelsea. We’ve also been exploring other peoples’ walks in Exeter, which is proving to be a mine of intriguing stories. So here’s a chance to catch up on what we’ve been doing, events you may have been to, things to buy, and forthcoming attractions…

***NIGHTWALK WINTER SOLSTICE***NIGHTWALK WINTER SOLSTICE**

It’s two years since the first Nightwalk Midwinter. Join us for the next walk this Winter Solstice, the 21st December. We will attempt to navigate the obstacle course that is/was Pedley Street and Cheshire Street, and to find the remaining gaps in the known through which to slip.

+++++++THE KENSINGTON AND CHELSEA ARCHIVE+++++++++++++++

In July we inaugurated the Kensington and Chelsea branch of the walkwalkwalk archive with a day-long (gruelling) performance in Chelsea Physic Garden. The rain stopped, politely, precisely one minute before the start of our performance (if you remember July there were frequent deluges.) People brought us a fantastic array of objects ranging from a fragment of paving stone reputedly worth £100 per m/Sq to a leaking green biro and a broken hair band.

All of these finds are now available to view on our WALKFINDS BLOG at

http://walkfinds.blogspot.com/

and the archive can be seen at

*************LAST OF THE PYLON WALKS?*****************************

The last (?) of the Pylon walks in June was a melancholy wander through what is now the Olympic Zone. On the day before the area was closed to the public we witnessed the car garages and industrial units dismantling their premises, some literally taking the roofs off. Compulsory Purchase Orders flapped in the breeze. We managed to gain access across the bridge to Manor Farm Allotments, lush with ripe produce, but absolutely deserted, and due to be demolished.
It seemed that the walk was doomed to go undocumented, but we have managed to retrieve some images from the broken camera - see them now at: http://www.walkwalkwalk.org.uk/2ndlevelpages/PylonWalk3.html

……………………..R.I.P. Pedley Street and The Flying Hut………………………
………………………………………………………………………………………………….
Gone. The area where we had our fires, where Sam Lee sang under the bridge, where the mythical Fight Club bought and sold broken arms…all gone. The whole of Pedley Street is under a mountain of earth. Sturdy nine-foot fences bisect Pedley Street from the park, and create narrow gangways, prime for mugging. But the winos are still holding out. Do you have stories or photos? Send them to us and we’ll add them to our collection at
http://pedleystreetRip.blogspot.com

We’re also compiling a list of films that use the flying hut, the footbridge, and under the bridge at Pedley Street as locations so if you spot them, or know of any that use them, please let us know.

***********STORIES FROM THE EXETER ARCHIVE*************************
We’ve been a bit quiet in London since the Summer as we’ve been working on Stories From The Exeter Archive. Our week-long residency at Spacex Gallery in August gave us the opportunity to gather volumes of fascinating and magical walk stories, and to meet a virtual cast list of intriguing people. We are currently working on a series of twelve posters based on our stories of Exeter Walks, which will be installed in Exeter Central Train Station. An array of printed ephemera inspired by our Exeter adventures will be widely disseminated across the town…coming soon to a Church Notice Board near you (if you live in Exeter). The project will be launched in Spring 2008 with a new nightwalk in Marsh Barton Industrial Estate.
Images from our trip are on the website – including Bernadot and the Mannequins…and the extreme Topiary of Alphington

+++++++++The Walking Artists Network+++++++++++++++++++++++
We are currently involved in establishing an international network of artists whose practice engages with walking as a medium. The inaugural meeting will be in January 2008. The aim is to create a forum for exchange and support, and to encourage debate and thought in this area of work. We have some great artists lined up to talk at the first meeting, including Melissa Bliss, Clive Brandon, Viv Corringham, and walkwalkwalk. We’ll keep you informed on the Network’s progress.
