BETHNAL GREEN OLD TOWN HALL COMMISSION We are currently working on a site-specific commission for the Grade II-listed Bethnal Green Old Town Hall, which is being transformed by RARE architecture to become Town Hall Hotel and Apartments, opening spring 2010. We're creating three large scale text pieces, and a set of smaller signs, of stories from the walk route (a route which has always passed by the Old Town Hall). Our tales of the everyday and overlooked will be embedded into the fabric of the building, alongside older vestiges of Bethnal Green lore (including the stained glass 'Blind Beggar' window). We seek to celebrate the characters and encounters of the walk - Billy, Nora and Bird - commencing a new process of myth making to accompany the Blind Beggar into the future imagination of Bethnal Green. Some of the stories have had earlier incarnations as fly posters, and formed part of our installation at Camden Arts Centre in September 2006 The project has been commissioned by Artsadmin, in partnership with RARE architecture.
